Analogies
John V. Atanasoff is known
as the father of the computer. With the help of one of his students
Clifford E. Berry, in Iowa State College, during the 1940s, he created
the ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) that was the first electronic digital
computer.
Analogies are comparisons that can be used to create or strengthen arguments. they can be used to increase understanding of one topic by comparing it to another. Comparing one unfamiliar topic or idea with one that is quite familiar makes it easier to understand to topic or idea. For example, an English teacher was testing her students' knowledge about the characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet. She may include the following type of analogy question:
Bart Simpson : Marge Simpson :: Prince Hamlet :
This question is asking what is the relationship with Prince Hamlet that is quite familiar to the relationship between Bart and Marge Simpson. The answer to this question would be "Queen Gertrude" because Gertrude and Hamlet, like Marge and Bart, are mother and son. The analogy here is to simply test the knowledge of relationships. Analogies examples with their corresponding meanings are the best way to show the true meaning of the word "analogy". Example:
- The relationship between them began to thaw. This means that the relationship was changing.
- You are as annoying as nails on a chalkboard. This means that you must be pretty annoying for someone to say that.
- He is like a rock. This means that he is steadfast and strong.
Analogies are often used in legal cases and in literature to help the readers understand an idea or to fully visualize a scene. example of the way that an analogy can be used in fiction:
At the end of the worst day yet that year, the boy crawled under his bed covers the way a scared hermit crab retreats to his shell.
The analogy here is that the boy is to his bed as a hermit crab is to his shell or boy : bed :: hermit crab : shell. Also many famous people have also used analogies to explain their positions or their opinions on a issue. Similes and metaphors are closely related to analogies, because a simile is where two things are compared while a metaphor is where unlike things have something in common.
John Vincent Atanasoff
John Atanasoff was born October 4, 1903, in Hamilton, New York. With
Clifford Berry, he developed the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, capable of
solving differential equations using binary arithmetic. In 1952 he
established the Ordnance Engineering Co. In 1973, after a judge voided a
patent owned by Sperry Rand Corp., the Atanasoff-Berry Computer was
credited as the first electronic digital computer.
Thanks to Atanasoff we have computers that are capable of solving all of ours problems. With this computer we can communicate with other people, look for any kind of information, do your works, pay debts, look for videos, music, etc. To put it simply we can do anything with the computer, but at the same time it is affecting us because nobody is using their knowledge to do thing that they are capable of doing if we at least try.
